The second Moscow International Congress of Traumatologists and Orthopedists “The Road traffic accident injuries and their sequels: pitfalls, mistakes and complications in treatment” was held in Moscow March, 24-25.
The event was supported by the Ministry of Health and Social Development of Russia and Moscow Government. It was organized by the European Association of Trauma and Emergency Surgery, the Russian State Medical University named after N.I. Pirogov and Consulting Group “Polylog”.
The Congress was attended by over 1200 medical practitioners from Russia, the CIS and Baltic countries, Germany, Switzerland, France, the USA, Greece, Romania, Iran, Turkey and other countries. Leading experts in traumatology, orthopedics and reconstructive surgery shared their experience in treatment and rehabilitation of patients with colleagues and found out more about the methods of famous foreign medical practitioners.
The keynote speeches of the Organizing Committee members and the Presidium opened the first day of the Congress. Professor A.V. Skoroglyadov, the Head of the Department of Traumatology, Orthopedics and battlefield surgery in RSMU in his opening speech wished all the participants fruitful cooperation and work.
Director of FSI VCMK “Protection” S. F Goncharov marked the organization of medical care and medical evacuation as a key issue and thanked the organizers of the Congress for a highly topical multidisciplinary program. After the opening ceremony different sections began its work immediately.
In the session “Organizational issues of aid delivery to road traffic accident victims” the representatives of Moscow Health Department talked about the peculiarities of medical aid delivery in cases of road traffic accidents in megapolises at pre-hospital stage.
On the first day of the Congress two sessions on the topic “Treatment of road accident victims” were held. Ex-President of the European Association of trauma and emergency surgery Pol Rommens and his colleague P. F. Petersen, Head of the Emergency Department at the University Hospital Aachen, delivered the reports in the session “Techniques of aid delivery to patients with multi-system injuries”. Within the framework of the same session A. Sharipov and A. P. Koltovich spoke about the prehospital and early hospital period of chest injury in patients with severe concomitant injury and effectiveness evaluation of “Damage Control” Technique. Besides, the work was carried out in the session “Primary stabilization of pelvic fractures in patients with multisystem trauma” and “Open limb injuries”.
The representatives of the American College of Surgeons C.F Larsen and P.M. Pereira held a workshop where they described special training programs for nurses, doctors and paramedics in the management of acute trauma cases. ATLS and PHTLS techniques were developed by trauma specialists of the American College of Surgeons for effective training of medical personnel. These programs have already shown good results and they are widely used as a standard of medical care in 40 countries around the world. Soon ATLS and PHTLS programs are likely to appear in Russia.
Many important issues of modern medicine were touched upon in the session of the Congress in March, 25. One of them was emergency medical system reform. S. F. Bagnenko (professor, corresponding member of RAMS, Director of the Scientific and Research Institute of Emergency Medical Aid named after Janelidze I.I and one of the authors of the concept development and reform of emergency care at the prehospital and hospital stages in Russia) spoke about a new level system of emergency medical care in specialized trauma centres.
On the last day of the Congress the participants discussed such issues as “Compartment syndrome, Negative Pressure Wound Therapy (NPWT)”, “Prevention and treatment of complications”, “Reconstructive and restorative treatment of limb injury sequelae”. There was a lively emotional discussion of childhood trauma problems in the closing session of the Congress “Organizational and clinical aspects of medical aid delivery to children injured in road traffic accidents. The presentations of the speakers were so informative that it was decided to extend the time of the session for almost an hour.
Professors from Germany (Ch. Josten, S. Ruchholtz and T. Mueller) and Russia (M.A Strakhov, L. N.Solomin) organized a series of workshops. Such issues as polymer plaster application and functional orthotics were touched upon. Moreover, there was a demonstration of modern techniques of polymer dressing application and correction of bone deformities with the use of a computer navigation device.
Besides, the 10th Orthoforum anniversary symposium was held. It was chaired by its founder in Russia Dr. A. N Chelnokov. The experts spoke about the advantages of using Internet technologies in contemporary traumatology and orthopedics. The information partner of the Congress MDTube Company organized a live video broadcasting. A large symposium devoted to the revision endoprosthesis in cases of femoral bone defects was held in the afternoon.
All the participants of the II International Congress of Traumatologists and Orthopedists could learn more about innovative products at the exhibition “Modern technologies in traumatology, orthopedics, urgent surgery and intensive care”. More than 50 companies from different regions of Russia and foreign countries took part at this exhibition.
This Congress of Traumatologists and Orthopedists has become not only a scientific platform for the consolidation of professionalism, knowledge and experience of the medical community, but also a business platform for networking. “We need to organize similar events. The experts’ voice should be heard. Any discussion of the problem is always of great importance. This is the key to development and reform system in our country and it concerns not only emergency medical care”, said L.M.
